I won't object too heavily since it'll save me a fair amount of work,
but I'd like to avoid a situation where the multiword patch creates
problems for your work.  We should probably examine the situation wrt
the left_conflicts_size mechanism - this was the part I found hardest to
understand/modify, and it has changed a lot with your patches.  It would
be good if we could come to an agreement beforehand whether your new
version can be adapted.
