'Have' is definitely a better word for this usage than possess. I can
see disliking two 'have's in adjacent sentences, but I don't know if
there's a suitable word to replace; possess definitely isn't it.

I think NUL is preferable, as that's the ASCII name for the value. Zero
could possibly be confused with the character '0'.

I'd just kill the 'used the', making the text read, 'set the
