You have to use autoconf built from unmodified FSF sources of the relevant 
release, not any patched version installed as part of a GNU/Linux 
distribution.  If this leads to spurious diffs when regenerating with 
unmodified configure.ac, that suggests the last person to check in 
configure failed to follow this rule.
