Yes, the problem appears to be of the not-always-reproducible sort.  With the 
same set of sources, it arises on my desktop machine but not on my laptop.

Nice work indeed.  And getting rid (at last!) of the double gimplification for 
the elab routines should have a positive effect on some other things as well.
