I see your point and I agree, and that could be done in various ways, for instance just changing the *default* to i486.

However, the present issue is really about the builtins: in my opinion, to make all the users really happy either *all the targets and subtargets* should implement the atomic builtins or GCC should also provide a fall back library. That's the real point. And we are very far from it.
