The obscurity here is the reason I added the 'SHELL=/bin/sh -x' hint
in <http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2008-07/msg00454.html>.

Do you think this is too obscure?  I don't have a problem with
reverting the original patch if it causes more damage than good;
or add some comments if that helps (but where, and what?).
