In principle I think it will work the same way. I seem to remember
that the command-line handling turns non-alphanumeric characters into
"_".

In any case mainline is in stage 3, so whatever happens with this
patch it should wait until GCC 4.4 and then we will have plenty of
time to fine-tune it.
