I'm struggling with this one.  I hate to do an RC3, and if we accept
this patch, we probably need to do that.  But, I also hate to leave this
much of a compile-time improvement on the floor.

Richard, please wait until 4.2.1 is released before committing this.
But, if someone wants to lobby hard the other way, go ahead.
