People (like me) test the compiler during stage 1 on non-GNU platforms,
while they mainly develop on Linux.  Please don't make it more cumbersome to 
do so on these platforms.  And, yes,  requiring GMP or MPFR for the C 
compiler is highly questionable on my opinion.
