Why is it a bad idea ?  Is it the "funny options and DejaGNU goo" that 
you referred to or is there some other reason why you do not like it ?

Well I would definitely support the staged installation idea, I think 
that would really benefit gcc.

But at the moment, with the dependencies upon GMP and MPFR it really 
isn't a stand alone package.  Especially considering that the MPFR 
package is not a commonly installed package on most systems.
