Well, there are tuned external mem* routines available since years, also 
submitted to glibc, but rejected on the grounds that they were tuned for 
Opterons (despite helping Intel CPUs quite a bit) and new "generic" 
routines would be written for glibc.  That was a few months ago, since 
then silence ...  :-/
