FWIW, I tested the patch (after minor conflict resolves) also on seven 
architectures on the hammer branch, i.e. 3.3 based compiler, without 
hickups.  Doesn't say anything about 4.0 of course, but it's a data point.

And of course the patch is conservative in the way that it only changes 
something for cases which currently will ICE.
