I committed the patch as it stood.  It does not quite fix PR27554 but 
does clear up a bug hidden behind it.  In the course of developing a 
patch, I have found another bug that is so strange that I don't quite 
know yet how to report it!  I am working on it, though, and will post 
progress on Bugzilla.
