It may be that, as you have suggested, things already are OK.  However,
I don't have enough knowledge to be able to say for sure; all I know is
that this definitely *used* to be necessary.

I would suggest raising the issue on the libstdc++@gcc.gnu.org list.  If
the libstdc++ maintainers agree that this is safe, then the patch itself
would be OK.
