Ok. This is not specific to C++, is it? Because in any case this doesn't work 
in the C frontend either. 

however, cases like

  int i = __builtin_nanf("");

do produce a "overflow in implicit constant conversion" diagnostic. I guess a 
bit more is missing for that.
