However, I have taken the opportunity, wherever possible, to use the 
test cases to ensure that the functionality that was not available with 
the PR is tested; with a view to ensuring that the testsuite is just a 
bit more than a reminder of what was broken.  Perhaps, however, the 
compile option can be specified such that only one level of optimisation 
is run?  It would be nice to check that not only does the compiler 
complete without error but that the code can be executed too.

Would it be an idea to have a part of the testsuite that tested things 
that work rather than ensuring that which was broken remains fixed?
