Paul, 

You just saved my reputation.

I thought that all was under control, vise a vise HIRLAM.
The remaining problems were just non-standard code in HIRLAM,
nothing to do with GNU Fortran.

And then some stuff appeared that probably was hidden in the
build process - seven main programs that segfaulted the compiler.

Fortunately, it turned out to be the statement function bug that
you supplied a fix for just 3 minutes after I had re-updated my
SVN checkout ;-)

Pffffuw !

Thanks.

I will now go to our Budapest meeting confident of a notebook
full with ready-to-run HIRLAM executables (except that I didn't
think of getting some data to run on this afternoon ;-(
