    you might be able to save some memory by this approach, I guess.
    Nevertheless, it seems very intrusive to me and I don't see any
    other advantages.

I don't understand the other suggestions well enough to contrast them
with my old suggestion, but the basis of my suggestion is that the
annotations can be gradually increased in detail and in what is being
exposed without affecting the form of the tree itself.  I don't see the
memory issue as being the main driver.
