I'm happy to delegate this to the normal libffi maintainers, asking them
to use the same caution that is used for other parts of the compiler
that are not considered "release-critical"; in particular, please err on
the side of conservatism, and please do not do things that might cause
problems for people who upgrade from one release version to another in
the same release series.
