Mainline space problem

This has now passed a bootstrap and make check on powerpc-darwin. 
libjava did not build with or without the patch, but otherwise there 
were no problems.  The libjava problem has already been discussed.  I 
will take a look at it if no one else gets to it before I do.

The patch has been checked in.
