Yep, I see the usefulness of that ....

I will.

However, my question was about (as Kelly stated):

"The mainline copy of gcc_release is used for creating snapshots for all 
the current versions of GCC, so the changes you made to it are not 
correct as that would cause the g77-* file to no longer be generated for 
3.[34].x."

In this case I have to at least revert my change to 
maintainer-scripts/gcc_release.
