I tried 'make clean', 'make distclean' and even removing the build
directory all together... still I get the same error when I try to
bootstrap (??)

I see this all the time.  Solution, make clean.  There is a missing
dependancy I think, but I've not tracked it down.

If you save off all the build products, you can mix and match them and
find the one that went astray, then we can explore which dependancy is
missing.
