RFA [3.3]: patch for optimization/10392

This patch fixes the bug.  The date in the ChangeLog
entry is when it was applied to mainline.

I have done a bootstrap and gcc/g++ tests on i686-pc-linux-gnu
with this patch, comparison was fine, no regressions.
