Are you objecting to the patch?  IMO the second of Andrew's quotes has
it right, "can not" is not incorrect but "cannot" is preferred in most 
contexts,
so the patch looks like an improvement.  (As for the first quote, 
people who
think they know better than the dictionary are rarely convincing IMO.)
