It's a lot of patch, so I looked mostly at the idea and scanned the
implementation. It looks good to me and since this will finish off the
symbol rewriting that you wanted to do I'm all in favor of putting this
into 3.4.

Mark? I believe you have the final say. I don't expect a lot of bug
fixing in the mips backend (unless I get a lot of bug reports sometime
soon) so the danger there is minimal.
