Your understanding was nearly correct, except that there is no cache used
at all (and it can't because the number of blocks changes, while the cache
is only usable when it stays constant).

Don't worry.  I'll do this now.  I had no time when I wrote the patch for
Brad, but now I bootstrapped/regtested on i686-linux.
