Adding all of that preprocessor stuff doesn't seem like a good solution. 
  Isn't there any other way to solve the problem, like adding sizeof 
tests?  I will defer on this for now.

The message doesn't make it clear why the test fails, and hence doesn't 
make it clear why we can't use something simpler like a sizeof test.

I haven't gotten this far in my backlog yet.  These were all posted in 
the last 4 days, so I will defer them for now.
