Erhm...  I think it was necessary back when I wrote this up.

Anyway, would you care enough to test a patch to that effect on your
faster irix box, and post it?  I'm sure Eric would approve it
immediately.  Thanks a bunch for helping test this change.
Development on Irix would have been far more painful without your
help.
