Not really.  Good catch, DJ.

Pre-Posix shells may not support this.  I distinctly remember our
avoiding this kind of construct in autoconf due to portability issues,
and Zack actually reminded me of that a couple of weeks ago when he
asked me a question along these lines.  Nathanael, please go ahead and
