*Still* unreviewed patches

As mentioned before, these patches have been bootstrapped and make
check'd on multiple platforms (rs6000, x86), and can provide
significant performance benefit, and memory reduction.
I would much appreciate it if someone would review them.

The first should be completely non-controversial, it's only compiled, not used (the followup patches start using it).

It's been in all of my trees for a *long* time.

It would be nice if someone would approve these.
