Libtool upgrade

Why are you putting this change on the branch?  

Are their known bugs in libtool that are affecting people that make
this worthwhile?  If so, you should have mentioned them.

Historically, libtool upgrades have caused some temporary problems, so
we shouldn't be doing these unless we know we need them.
