autoconf for type sizes

There was no Makefile output! 

(Sorry for borring gcc-patches about this, but that was experience in
trying to use CVS autotools).

The situation might be better with the yet-to-be-released autotools
but, that wasn't my recent experience.

Anyway, other people with CVS autotools exprience with GCC (at least
V3) might want to step in.
