OK for trunk and mainline.  Yes, I definitely agree with you about
sharing the code later.  I was somewhat constrained at first by
the fact that there was originally talk of supporting both ABIs
indefinitely, but now that we are dropping the old ABI it should
be possible to simplify things somewhat.
