No more multiline string constants

Did anyone ever broadcast this proposed change out to large bodies
of developers, like comp.sys.linux.* and such?  Based on previous
experience, it can take a long time to propagate awareness of the
change, and at this point only a handful of people have even tried
3.0, let alone rebuilt their big hairy code bases.

Can we expect to get any kind of a performance win by making the
change now rather than later?
