Can somebody else with a recent Solaris system try Neil's patch?  I want
this failure reproduced independantly before I rule out the possibility
of local wackiness on my systems.

For that matter, how does this affect other platforms?  It works fine
on GNU/Linux and breaks on Solaris 8... we're 1 and 1.  :-)  How about
Solaris 7, or IRIX and the other primary eval platforms?  Maybe Mark can
donate a dozen processors on that massively parallel IRIX box to test this
patch on the side.  :-)

It would be a Very Good Thing if this could go in 3.0.  If solaris2.8 is the
only platform on which it has problems, that's no reason to reject the patch.
