Michael Chastain reminded me that the libtool changes that went into the 3.0 branch before the 3.0 release haven't been installed in mainline yet, so I'm doing it now. Here's the patch I'm checking in. Tested by thousands (millions?) of happy (and no-so-happy) GCC 3.0 users on many different platforms :-)
