Patch for g++

  I'll approve the C++ part of the patch -- obviously the rest of the
patch is in your purview!  I think the questions about `$' are valid,
but your explanation about `.' makes sense, and your belief that
platforms that don't like `$' already don't work with Java makes this
seem like a non-issue for now.

  And removing the mangling dependency in libgcj is clearly a good
thing.

  Go for it.
