The memtest and memcpy failures are new - I'm not sure which else are
new.  

The problem of excessive memory usage which I've reported has been
confirmed.  cc1 uses sometimes more than 256 MB and can't be compiled
anymore on my notebook with 128 MB of RAM and 128 MB of swap (I
managed to do this before your changes went in).

My system: glibc 2.1.3, i686-linux.
