(*) I do still think this is a good idea, by the way.  Of particular
    to interest to you is that doing what I suggested would require
    some changes in the way internationalization is done.  I actually
    think these would be changes for the better, and they could
    certainly still be done using the gettext framework.

    It's just that there would be a file full of all the error
    messages issued by each front-end, and that file would have
    to contain `_("an error message")' for each error message.
