http://www.freebsd.org says "FreeBSD is an advanced BSD UNIX operating
system", which is not that clear to me -- but note that I am not a native
speaker!

In general I have noticed that people often, and also on these lists, use
"BSD" to refer to "{Free,Open,...}BSD", that's why I wanted to clarify.

I apologize if my posting had an adversary effect.

Sorry, but I understood "Michael's version of BSD" as in "Gerald's
computer", and I don't see how this should be an insult?

4.3BSD was a great achievement at its time and served as the base for a
lot of developments in (other) operating systems. It is not actively used
as widely as it used to be, but those that do use (and maintain) it care
very much about it and strongly reject the idea of retrofitting it with
the equivalent of airbags.

This is what I basically ment by that comparison. Sorry if that was not
clear enough from my original posting.

I certainly do agree. And making GCC more portable certainly is an idea
I am strongly in favor of.

It seems we don't really disagree, after all?
