The names TYPE_RETURNS_STACK_DEPRESSED etc, are a bit confusing to
someone who learnt on stack-up machines. It doesn't match my naive
abstract idea of a stack either. Does TYPE_RETURNS_STACK_GROWN
describe the behaviour better without implying a stack direction?

I don't think so. "depressed" does indeed imply "down", but I'd say
that "grown" implies "up" to the same extent.
