ELIMINABLE_REGS should not mention the PIC register.  At all.
Not for AIX either.  That's what most ought to be fixed.

But I'm not especially comfortable worming my way through the
7 or 8 alternatives, so I'm going to leave alone and let Geoff
take care of it when he gets back.
