I'm sorry to hear that.  But as you note, these things happen.  There's just
not enough hours in the day to deal with everything, particularly for a port
which has so many problems that needed fixing.

This isn't significantly different than any other release cycle; some things
get done, others do not.  We try to make a best guess about priorities based
on numerous factors, including popularity of the port, current state of the
port, how much time to fix the port, etc etc.

Conflicts tend to happen due to differing priorities put on a particular port
by different developers.  This is one of the things that makes doing release
so stressful.

The better shape a port is in when the release cycle starts, the better shape
it will be in when the release is made.  Bugs need to be addressed throughout
the entire development cycle, not just during the release phase.  The release
phase is primarily to detect and fix regressions, not to tackle old long
standing problems.
