	This calls make_memloc needlessly.

OK, I see that in rare cases my version will have an unnecessary
make_memloc call.  It doesn't seem to matter much, but then my rewrite doesn't
seem to matter much either.

I think your original version of the patch is OK to check in, though I think
you should add in the two comments I added, because they make the code easier
to understand.
