Unfortunately, the testsuite never builds a .so.  This is why this
problem remained undiscovered for so long.  People that know about such
things say the harnesses aren't well suited to doing it.

Sorry.   I may have been unclear.

There were regressions in the last 24 hours, but the results with
and without your patches were identical.  So I don't think we broke
anything. :-)
