GCC manual and --coverage vs -fprofile-arcs -ftest-coverage

As documented, --coverage is a synonym for -fprofile-arcs -ftest-coverage
(when compiling).

Then why does the GCC manual use "-fprofile-arcs -ftest-coverage"
instead of the simpler "--coverage"?
