Okay, I found gcc.c-torture/execute/20100430-1.c, which actually 
generates misalignment.

So I'll proceed under the assumption that this in fact works.  (And 
perhaps design things in such a way that we can easily test with 
misaligned buffers, just to be on the safe side.)
