I followed the HowTo at

I am running Ubuntu 12.04. I just did this last night, and the C code 
I'm using is very simple, so I have not "stressed" this installation. My 
primary interest is in looking at the assembly language code the 
compiler generates for my introductory textbook.

So far, so good (with a small n).
