problem compiling gcc

nobody has any reason or suggestions as to obvious things i'm overlooking?
a real pain just to get a compiler that understands 64 bit binary constants

mac os-x server 10.4.11, ppc g5 quad core,
12 gb sdram, xcode 2.5 (gcc system 4.0.1)
