How do I get strarted with using GCC?

Not by me, so I downloaded the Eclipse C/C++ IDE and tried to look
"how one compiles with it"... These things seemed to have implemented
by "some aliens from Ganymede" because I didn't understand anything :(
The "paradigm shift" may be just as hard from command line to a GUI...
